Simplification is key for Anna – Louise Illing. From her strict, black only policy on clothing to her elegant, clutter-free home, less proves to be more for this down-to-earth fashion girl. We interviewed Anna in her home and got the scoop on how she got her start working for The British Fashion Council, her 5 wardrobe essentials, and when to splurge on that piece you’ve been dreaming of.
Can you tell us a little about yourself and your career so far?
At school, art was one of my stronger subjects and when I realized it was likely that I was not going to make it as an artist (during my foundation year), I thought I could organize the stuff instead! I gained as much experience as I could during my studies and naturally fell into events / doing a degree in Arts & Event Management!
What has been the most memorable moment of your career, to date?
I think there have been many, but ultimately what's constantly great is working with an amazing group of people and also enjoying what I do day to day.
Describe a time early in your career where you felt you could say, ‘I made it’.
I feel that I am still rather early on in my career, therefore, every achievement is a moment where you feel 'we've made it' ...job well done... let’s celebrate!
Do you have any fun projects coming up?
Working in fashion events means there are always fun projects coming up. Always looking forward to Fashion Week.
If you weren't in Events, what would your Plan B career be?
I would love to be the female version of Indiana Jones.
How do you maintain a work/life balance?
Purely by being organized in my work life and totally disorganized in my personal life. It seems to work and balance itself out quite nicely.
How would you describe your personal style?
Colourful... bright... JOKE! I only ever wear black! It's easy and you don't have to put too much thought into it. Plus, it can get a little dirty and no one notices.
Most treasured/favourite item in your wardrobe?
Currently really loving my Men’s M&S cashmere jumper.
Name 5 essential pieces of clothing:
Comfy smart trousers, bomber jacket, simple jumpsuit, vintage high waisted jeans and a scarf that is actually a bed throw - all black of course.
What items do you feel are worth splurging on?
Anything that you really can't stop thinking about, live without or that you need to have, however outrageous it might be.
What’s the best style advice you’ve received?
Always be comfortable.
Who is your style icon?
I don't think I have a specific style icon. If I like, it I'll wear it.
Where’s your favourite place in London/UK?
I have a few fave spots dotted across London, but whatever mood I'm in, Hampstead Heath can cater to them all.
Do you have a bucket list?
Currently still working on it.
